The Jackson elk herd numbers about 10,000 animals. This large population is due to a winter feeding program on the National Elk Refuge and 22 other feed grounds operated by the Wyoming Game and Fish department. Despite the presence of wolves since their reintroduction to the area in 1995, the elk population of the the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem continues to thrive.
